Effective Tips to Discipline a One-Year-Old

15 Jun, 2023

Although it seems strange to discipline a newborn, discipline is not a form of punishment. It means learning. Just talking to them will act as teaching.

How should a One-year-old baby learn to behave in manners?

One-year-old baby learn to behave

Babies can learn a language using talking. Your baby will learn more words the more you chat with them. Learning proper behavior takes time. It doesn't happen immediately. You can develop the habit of teaching your child sense rather than punishment by discussing the explanations for good behavior.

Here are some helpful suggestions for having a well-mannered One-year-old.

Make Clear Boundaries and Clear Rules

One-year-olds are babies. They don't act badly intentionally. However, they do have an eye for getting into trouble, whether it be by moving or taking a thing that is off-limits. Be consistent and set clear boundaries. Don't let your child use your iPad "just this once" if you don't want them to. It can be frustrating when they were able to touch it yesterday but can't today.

Set a good model and assist them when they're practicing.

Your child is constantly observing you. Set a role model for your child to follow. This means that you shouldn't shout at your child when they misbehave if you don't want them to scream when things don't go their way. When you disagree with a child's behavior, be polite and respectful even when you don't agree with them. This allows your child to do the same when they disagree with you.

If it's possible to do so, encourage them to attempt again after making a mistake so they can improve. Explain why it's bad etiquette for for example if they throw their spoon on the table after eating. Then, while it is still fresh in their minds, have your child practice by showing them how to gently put it down.

Teach Praise for good behavior and put a value on effort above results

A child receives reinforcement for their activities when they get recognition for their good behavior. One of the techniques of positive discipline that are frequently employed in successful parenting is positive reinforcement. Rather than praising someone's ability, emphasize their effort and the process.

Be Patient And Positive

Inductive discipline is frequently rejected by parents because they feel it "doesn't work" after a few unsuccessful attempts. Babies who are learning to stand up frequently try and fail. It takes a lot of practice for a baby to stand up properly. We wouldn't say, "Stop it.” We won't attempt again until you choose to stand. Instead, we kindly help children while they practice since we understand that learning how to control and develop the bones in their legs takes time.

Use Assertive Vocal Tones

While babies and young children might not fully understand the words you use to explain why they are being disciplined, they can more easily view a change in your tone of voice. Let your child know that their behavior is inappropriate and shouldn't be repeated by speaking in an angry and deep voice. The word "no" or the command "stop doing that" are additional ways to signal that their inappropriate behavior is not acceptable.

Be Consistent

The key to dealing with kids who try to ignore you is consistency. Your child will learn right from wrong much more quickly if you are consistent about what is acceptable, what is not, and how you handle it. Don't ignore a behavior the next day if you praised or called out it the day before. This is soon going to become confusing. Make sure all careers are on the same page and treat it the same way you did before. However, if something is off-limits, maintain it that way. Avoid having strict discipline one day and letting off the next. Being consistent may help your child in remembering what is and is not appropriate behavior as well as how to follow rules because they are still learning the difference between right and wrong.
